Hillbilly Elegy: An unflinchingly honest memoir and social analysis about working-class, white America — the good, the bad, and the ugly.
“I’m reading hillbilly elegy right now and love it. It’s put into words a lot about middle and lower class white America. There are a lot of personal parallels there. I’m not sure if it would resonate with someone who didn’t grow up in that culture or area. Or maybe it’s exactly what we need to help begin to understand each other. Bonus, the author was a public affairs Marine.” – Maggie S., US Marine
The Liberal Redneck Manifesto: Draggin’ Dixie Outta the Dark: Three liberal, white, southern men take on the attitudes of the South. An insightful critique of illiberal policies that becomes laugh out loud funny when viewed through the lens of stand-up comics.
“The Liberal Redneck Manifesto is absolutely hilarious and incredibly smart. It’s insightful, thought-provoking and honest. The authors dive into the stereotypes of the south, talk about some of the realities behind the stereotypes, and then bust some of them up. There’s a whole chapter on the 2nd Amendment and southern folk’s relationship to guns. There’s a lot of discussion about racism, sexism, music, religion, poverty, drugs/alcohol, and of course… delicious southern food. For an outsider like me, this book helped give some insight on the southern (white) perspective and experience. And for a southerner, I would imagine this will resonate simply because they are speaking your truth. I highly recommend listening to it on audiobook because hearing it read by the authors makes it infinitely funnier!” – Erica H., US Army National Guard Spouse
Randy Rainbow: A YouTube sensation who parodies the news of the day by turning them into Broadway-style skits.
“I love Randy Rainbow. His lyrics and parodies are genius. He makes me laugh when I really want to cry.” Dawn H., US Marine Mom
Pod Save America: A political podcast from the founders of Crooked Media. Fun, honest, and surprisingly inspirational.
“Pod Save America is a hilarious, progressive take on current events from former Clinton and Obama staffers. It pairs information with ways to become active and make a difference. They have interesting guests and have a great way of breaking down what is important and what is distraction. I look forward to it every week.” – Allison M., US Navy Spouse
Pod Save the World: A foreign policy podcast from the creators of Pod Save America. An entertaining and educational way to spend an hour.
“I love that Pod Save the World interviews folks who have been involved in making decisions about foreign policy and national security. The Pod makes an effort to have the guests explain in plain language the considerations that went into decisions and policy making they were a part of as well as the potential consequences to moves by the current administration both positive and negative. I think it’s well done because it presents a logical thought process through a progressive lens.“ – Elena R., US Air Force Veteran and current US Air Force Spouse
